I Hadn't Really Lived Until.....

When I'm traveling and enjoying all the new sights, sounds and experiences, I so often find myself thinking "I hadn't really lived until..."

So that got me thinking. Surely everyone has such moments, whether happy, silly, sad, exciting, challenging, poignant, inconsequential but worth a chuckle, a moments reminiscence...and I decided to share mine while asking for those of others.

What's your favorite "I hadn't really lived until..." moment? Send me a picture and your story in 250 words or less, and once a month I'll choose my favorite story and publish it here with my own, with full credit given where due, of course.

Wow me, move me, tickle me or make me think of something I had not before...and if your story is chosen, I'll send you a free Travelling Book Society copy of my book, Each Wind That Blows!

I got up close and personal with an elephant trunk...

On a recent visit to the Elephant Cafe in Livingston, Zambia, I had the mind blowing experience of hanging out with three massive bull elephants named Bob, Dan and Matanda. Very keen on the snacks provided to us to...

I watched a kid being born. As in a goat, that is.

A goat I suggested be named Esmeralda. Why? Because I could. And because they wanted a name that started with an E, and that was the first thing that came to mind. Why? Because I'd recently met a very cool lady from D...

I watched the storm roll in over the Inyanga Mountains...

...of Northeastern Zimbabwe. The vivid green of moments before paled and retreated in the face of the oncoming storm, the roiling clouds and blustery winds. And when the rain finally sought us out, it brought wi...

I lost a staring contest with a Hyrax.

Also known as a rock rabbit, and get this - the closest living relative of the elephant. Who would have thought? I only know the guy aces the whole 'first to blink loses' game, because try as I might, I could not outstare the litt...

The silk of an immature corn cob caught my eye...

Prettily beaded in morning dew, sparkling in the early morning light. And I marvelled at the beauty of something so simple, so unassuming, and wondered what else I missed of the beauty of Creation, day in, day out....

I came upon the boy in the wheelbarrow...

...and was reminded of how simple it was to have fun when I was little. Except the little boy was very grumpy and clearly not having fun, so that ruined it for me a little. Brat. Did he not know how much fun he was having!!?

What...

I crossed an African river on a simple ferry...

...the warm dry wind of the African winter cooling my face. Strung on cables, powered by what looked barely bigger than a lawn mower engine, serenely chugging from bank to bank, unmoved by the croc infested! Hippo congest...

I was attacked by a Praying Mantis.

Yes, really. There I was, minding my own business, mesmerized by the beauty of a flowering, fruiting papaya tree when I noticed this little fellow watching my every move. So, being the Nature Paparazzi that I am, I of course began ph...

I watched the sun set over the Zambezi from a sky chair under a mango tree. Enough said.

August 12, 2017

I saw the joy in the face of a little girl named Ellie, all because she found a turtle...

Or is it a tortoise? Never mind. If those sparkling eyes and that smile don't make you feel just a little more alive than you did a moment ago, I can't help you.

What's ...

I took a closer look at the beauty of the flowering papaya tree..

That was right before the Praying Mantis attacked me, so it was a two for one deal. It was a good day for living!

What's your story? I want to know!! Send me photo if you have it, and your story in 250 wor...

I saw this relic of a previous age and realized it was still a reality for some...

Wandering through a quiet forest in Zambia, I came upon a simple hut, quiet except for the clucking of chickens. And there stood this iron, speaking of the simple times in which their inh...

The Frog Who Stalked Me

....I felt eyes upon me and looked down the leg of my chair to lock eyes with an exquisite, if beady eyed Zambian Treefrog, official name as yet unknown....Not much bigger than the first joint of my thumb, his colorful markings hinted at poison...

The Elephant Who Charged Me....(and about dozen others)

Looks nice, yes? Horse and rider peacefully communing with handsome African elephant, horse lazily swishing at flies, you can all but hear the birdsong and gentle breeze rustling the dry grass....but in the next f...
